A CHINCHILLA couple has celebrated a stunning milestone - their diamond wedding anniversary - surrounded by friends and family at the Chinchilla RSL Club.

Kevin and Fay Kerswell were married on April 12, 1958, and on Easter Saturday this year they were treated to a marvellous surprise party organised by their daughter.

Daughter Leanne Kingdom said there was a lot of effort put into the affair, with everyone keeping the secret "right up until they walked in and everyone was there”.

"My dad said there were tears in his eyes,” Mrs Kingdom said.

What made the day even more special was the presence of some very precious people.

"The one really good fact was, all bar one of their bridal party was there,” Mrs Kingdom said.

"The lady who made their original wedding cake, Irene Olm, made this one.”

Mr and Mrs Kerswell were congratulated by not only friends and family, but the Queen, Prime Minister, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk, MP David Littleproud, the Queensland Governor, and the Governor-General, who all sent the happy pair letters of congratulations.

A neighbour even wrote and recorded a poem for the Kerswells about the year they were married.

"(Mum) said 'I honestly had no idea' and she was thrilled,” Mrs Kingdom said.

There was even some classic wedding treats for the pair, organised by Mrs Kingdom.

"Mum and Dad had had the original sugar-coated almonds (at their wedding) so I did them all in pink and blue for this,” she said.

Mrs Kingdom thanked the RSL for its help in organising the party.

It's well-earned praise, with staff keeping the secret from the Kerswells, who are regulars at the RSL.

"They were brilliant, it all came together beautifully,” Mrs Kingdom said.
