Bears fight hard but can't hold off Willowburn

THE Chinchilla Bears played top-of-the-table Willowburn White in Toowoomba on Sunday in warm conditions at Commonwealth Oval.

The Bears were looking to rattle the top side in their run to the final series, as the Bears are now out of contention for a top four finish with only two games to go.

The Bears started the game well with the flow of the game not being dominated by either side. But at the eighth minute the referee awarded Willowburn a penalty when a Bears tackle was deemed late. Willowburn scored the dot shot and took an early lead. But this didn't down the Bears as opportunities were created with both Chris Cobb and Mark Johnson unlucky not to find the back of the net before the half-time break. Chinchilla were looking the most dangerous on the counter attack, while Willowburn could only fire off shots from outside the penalty box.

The second half saw a change of intensity from Willowburn and the Bears were under pressure early in the half.

Willowburn produced a goal from a corner at the back post. The Bears in the last few games have conceded some goals from not clearing the ball when defending corners. This occurred at the 54th minute, but the Bears were still pressing in attack to gain a goal back. Then at the 61st minute the Bears strike force took a setback when Nick Guymer sustained a knee injury. Guymer's penetrating runs on the right side had been troublesome for the Willowburn defence.

The Bears backline conductor Jonty Calleja kept things tight and this forced Willowburn to only have long range shots, which is how Willowburn scored their third goal at the 83rd minute. The Bears keeper reached the ball but could not clear it effectively.

The final result saw Willowburn White 3 defeating Chinchilla Bears 0. The Bears felt the scoreline was not a true indication of the game.

The Bears' final home game will be this Sunday at the Chinchilla Recreation Grounds, with kick off at 3pm.
