CHINCHILLA Bulldogs under-18s have returned home basked in glory after reigning supreme in the rugby league grand final in Roma at the weekend.
The Bulldogs proved too good for the Wallumbilla Red Bulls when they took them on at Bassett Park in Roma on Sunday, snatching the grand final crown with a 26-16 win.
Coach Craig Hammermeister said the team's defence was "beyond words”.
"The boys won the game with defence, a great attitude and commitment to the game, team and each other, it was just a great team performance,” Hammermeister said.
After solid defence and stellar attack in the first half, the boys came away in the lead at half time with an 8-6 score.
Romarda Barnes was taking bombs and returning the ball to Connor Baker, guiding the team around even while carrying an injury, while Benji Neliman scored the first of two tries for the match.
The second half began with Neliman scoring another try for the Bulldogs with a quick off load by Jye Polkinghorne .
Hammermeister said Polkinghorne not only did the hard runs but his ability to unload the ball in traffic and free up his runners to assist in try scoring was a credit to himself and the team.
He said Hayden Bender, Matt Nothdurft and Connor Harth played up a level in defence and were also an asset to the team.
The Red Bulls hit back with two tries to take the lead 16-14, but the Bulldogs bounced back with two quick tries from Bender to take them to victory.
