Iron Men and Women crowned at Melon Festival
CHINCHILLA'S new iron men and women have been crowned.
Spectators from near and far saw competitors run, slide, and spit their way to victory on Saturday afternoon but there could only be four champions.
Michaela Sanderson and local lady Tegan Cobb took out the first women's heat with only a second lead over runners up, Claire Nock and Marijke Hartman, who fiercely competed in the second heat.
Brothers Kieran and Byron Smith demolished the one and only men's race of the day, finishing a few lengths ahead of their closest competition.
This was the Smith's first Melon Festival and they said very little training had gone into their victory, Sanderson and Cobb on the other hand are well practised in the fine art of melon racing.
"This is the second or third time we've had a crack at the Iron Woman race together, but it's our first time winning,” Ms Cobb said.
