McGillivray takes out Bendemere Cup on debut

DAN McGillivray is off to a roaring start in country racing; in his first day on the job, he stormed down the track at Bassett Park to his first win as an apprentice.

That win happened to be Saturday's major race, the Bendemere Cup.

McGillivray has partnered up with local trainer Craig Smith, who has commended the rookie on his early success.

"This is really special, we have put a lot of time in with Dan over the last 13 months," Smith said.

"He came to me not being able to ride a horse and to have him win a race, it gives you so much joy and satisfaction."

Evidently, racing runs in the McGillivray family, with the apprentice crediting his jockey brother Matthew McGillivray for his influence.

He said the support from Smith and fellow jockeys on the country circuit has also been instrumental in this early success.

"I am feeling very grateful right now, thanks to my boss for putting me on the right horse," McGillivray said after his Cup win.

"I'm so happy to ride a winner at my home track, where my brother also had his first ride and also got a winner, so I'd like to thank my family for pushing me forward.

"Craig (Smith) has helped me a lot, because I came here knowing nothing; there is still a lot to learn and I'm grateful to the other jockeys including Zac Purton and my brother Matt who have given me tips.

"And I can't forget Chris Bryen, who has been really helpful here today - I was feeling very lost but he has been very helpful and I am so thankful for him."

Racing will return to Bassett Park on March 28 for the Roma Picnic Races.
