MPs kick a goal for Morcombe Foundation

THERE was yelling, tension and handballing responsibility between Queensland politicians on Monday.

While it sounds like an average day in parliament, this sparring happened in the annual city versus country MPs touch football match.

MPs paid to play in the charity match, raising $1500 for the Daniel Morcombe Foundation.

The country kids beat the city slickers for the fourth year running at five to two points.

The winning team included Labor's Keppel MP Brittany Lauga and Gladstone MP Glenn Butcher, the LNP's Glass House MP Andrew Powell, Buderim MP Steve Dickson and Toowoomba South MP John McVeigh, and Katter's Australian Party Dalrymple MP Shane Knuth

Although political parties were abandoned, competitive natures were not.

Who said politicians couldn't be good sports?:

The country captain had no love for her fellow LNP pollies once the whistle sounded, offering an endless stream of support for her Labor, LNP and Katter team mates and giving fellow LNP MP Michael Hart a verbal lashing when he pulled her up for cheating.

While trying to organise a battle plan during half time with her team, she identified LNP Chatsworth MP Steve Minnikin as the city team's "playmaker" to target.

Minnikin and LNP Everton MP Tim Mander were city's stand-outs.

But there was no stopping country's trifecta of LNP Burdekin MP Dale Last, Katter's Australian Party MP Robbie Katter and Knuth.

Labor Capalaba MP Don Brown received a special award for his effort before succumbing to an injury and Last was awarded man of the match.

But they all shone, according to Denise and Bruce Morcombe.

Bruce described the players as superstars.

"It was a great match, they did it for the right reason," he said.

"It's refreshing to be on a team you're not normally on," Lauga said.
