New study tests how cars behave in floodwater
AS RESIDENTS living on Australia's east coast braced for severe weather on the weekend, the University of New South Wales released results from a lab test that showed the behaviour of small and large cars in floodwaters.
A 1.05-tonne Toyota Yaris was moved by water 15cm deep and floated away when the level reached 60cm.
A 2.5-tonne Nissan Patrol was unstable when floodwater reached 45cm and completely floated when the level rose to 95cm.
Researchers said cars became vulnerable to moving floodwaters once the depth reached the floor of the vehicle.
