Owner puts out bus fire on Pacific Highway at Ballina
UPDATE 2:15pm : FIRE fighters were called off enroute to a bus that caught fire on the Pacific Highway resulting in up to 40 students being evacuated.
A highway patrol car at the scene advised fire fighters the owner of the bus had rectified the problem and smoke was no longer coming from under the dashboard.
Police were unable to provide details of the school or bus company involved.
UPDATE 1.20PM: POLICE are on scene of a reported bus fire on the Pacific Highway near Ballina.
A police spokesman confirmed there had been 30 to 40 students evacuated from the bus, about 2km north of the northern Ballina interchange.
INITIAL: UP TO 40 school children have been evacuated from a bus that caught fire on the Pacific Highway at Ballina.
A Newcastle Fire Communications spokesman said Fire and Rescue NSW Ballina brigade had been tasked to the bus fire, near River St at 12.40pm.
“Reports to police were that the bus was on fire and there was smoke coming from under the dashboard,” the spokesman said.
“30 to 40 kids have been evacuated.”
The spokesman said fire fighters and police were enroute to the scene.
