Use your melon 'n' buy local
THE time to use your melon and buy local has officially begun, with the Town Proud, Buy Local initiative kicking off once more in Chinchilla.
Launching in late September, the initiative, run by the Chinchilla Community Commerce and Industry Inc serves as an annual encouragement to shop local and support our major businesses.
CCCI event co-ordinator Gaye Smith said hopes were high the community would jump into the initiative once again.
"To make Chinchilla the beautiful town that it is, economically we need our money to stay here,” Ms Smith said.
"It's a really positive, exciting campaign for both shoppers and businesses.
"We do see the flow on effect throughout the year - it promotes business, it promotes liveability, it promotes prosperity.”
Town Proud works by CCCI providing participating businesses with prize draw entry forms they can then offer their customers as an incentive to shop locally.
These entry forms go into one of three Town Proud raffle prize draws.
The first two are held on October 15 and November 15.
Each is worth $500 of 'Chinchilla Money' - vouchers from local businesses for the winner to spend as they choose.
The final draw for the grand prize will take place on December 13 at the CCCI Christmas Street Party.
This grand prize is a $5000 shopping spree voucher at Betta Home Living, the initiative's major sponsor.
Ms Smith said encouraging people to buy local became increasingly important against the changing retail environment.
"There is the threat when people buy online or from out of town but, when you look at it, there is no real difference,” she said.
"By the time you put fuel in your car and travel elsewhere, or pay postage and shipping, you know what, we are very comparable in price.
"For a rural town we have pretty much everything here on offer and, if you are after something specific, our retailers will get it for you.
"When you shop locally, as compared to sitting in front of the computer and buying something, you get a more personalised service that is more about customer service and loyalty.”
